MICHAEL K. BROWN


Although Michael K. Brown’s books fall within the genre of contemporary Southern fiction, his novels explore the basic human conditions that are universal. In that regard, he strives to look beyond the cloak of characters, setting, and plot. The premise that guides Mike’s writing was expressed by William Faulkner when he said that the only thing worth writing about is "the human heart in struggle with itself." Below is a brief introduction to the six books he has written. is a collection of sixteen short stories that explore the human heart in conflict with itself. Most of the stories are set in the South or, at least, have a Southern flavor.

SOMEWHERE A RIVER, set in Alabama in the 1960s and Wyoming in the 1990s, is the story of a man who spends most of his adult life in guilty exile until he surrenders to the grace of self-forgiveness. For that novel, Mike was named the Georgia Author of the Year in Literary fiction by the Georgia Writers Association.
UNDER THE OAKS, set in a small Georgia town in the 1950s, follows a young couple in their journey of finding a life together.
TO CATCH THE WIND is set in the 1970s in the same small town depicted in UNDER THE OAKS, and continues the couple's story as their family struggles with a tragic loss.
PROMISE OF THE HILLS explores the love story of a senior couple who make a decision that will affect generations to come. The novel is a sequel to PROMISE OF SILVER, but can be read as a stand alone novel.
PROMISE OF SILVER features two seniors living in a retirement community off the coast of Georgia. When they meet, they face a decision of conscience that has no clear right or wrong answer.
Mike was born in Alabama and is a graduate of the University of Alabama. He lives in Loganville, GA, with his wife, Judy.
